A Deeper Dive | What to Expect Beneath the Surface

The thing about scuba diving Playa Flamingo is that you never truly know what’s going to come out of the blue, and that’s what keeps us addicted. During our Manta season—which generally runs from November through May—we get those legendary encounters with the Giant Pacific Mantas. Watching a 15-foot ray with a massive wingspan hover directly in your bubbles at a cleaning station is a humbling experience that never gets old, no matter how many thousands of logs you have in your vest.

But even on the days when the Mantas are elsewhere, the biodiversity is staggering. We’re constantly seeing White-Tip Reef Sharks stacked like cordwood in the sandy channels, massive schools of Cow-Nosed Rays pulsing past in formation, and hawksbill turtles tucked into the ledges for a nap. On the smaller side, we’re hunting for Harlequin Shrimp and nudibranchs in the rocky crevices. During the right time of year, we even have the acoustic backdrop of Humpback Whales singing so loudly you can feel the vibration in your chest while you’re at depth. It’s a sensory overload that proves why the Catalina Islands are the crown jewel of Costa Rican diving.
