Creature of the Month: The Green Sea Turtle

July is here, and the sea keeps surprising us! Thank you to our incredible community for diving with us, supporting the crew, and creating more unforgettable underwater memories.

This month, we’re spotlighting the Green Sea Turtle, one of the most commonly seen and beloved species while diving in Costa Rica. Gentle grazers, adults often rest on shallow reefs and cruise cleaning stations, making for relaxed, memorable encounters. It all begins on the beach, though, where tiny hatchlings like this one make their first dash across the sand to the sea.

Sadly, green turtles face serious threats at every stage. Marine debris is a big one: plastic bags can be mistaken for jellyfish and ingested, and litter or fishing gear can entangle them. Onshore, light pollution and coastal development disrupt natural nesting behavior and disorient hatchlings on that crucial first crawl, reducing survival rates.
