Our Creature of the Month is the Blue Sea Star!
This October we’re spotlighting the blue sea star (Phataria unifascialis). These striking sea stars range from vivid blue to purplish hues and can grow impressively large, often reaching more than a foot across. They’re frequent residents of rocky reefs and subtidal zones where they feed on bivalves, snails, and other invertebrates. Blue sea stars are notable for their ability to pry open shells and evert their stomachs to digest prey externally, a fascinating feeding behavior to watch (from a respectful distance). They’re generally slow-moving and non-aggressive; if you encounter one, admire its bold color and unique behaviors, but avoid touching it — handling can stress them and remove protective mucus. Their presence is also an encouraging sign of healthy benthic communities, so spotting one makes for a special sighting on any dive.
Join Our Beach Cleanups!
We’re proud members of the Bandera Azul Ecológica (B.A.E.) Playa Potrero committee and join their beach cleanups every month to protect our coastline. Together, we collect trash, document waste, and restore habitats, reminding our community that discarded trash, especially plastics, harms marine life, disrupts ecosystems, and can travel far from shore. It’s the same debris that threatens the marine life we love to see on our dives — which is why our Dive Against Debris program matters year-round.
Join us at the next cleanup and help keep the ocean healthy for generations to come. Watch our announcement on WhatsApp and social media for an underwater cleanup in October.
Congrats to Our New Students
Huge congratulations to our newest graduates, welcome to the dive community! Otto has completed his PADI Open Water certification, and Anna has completed her Divemaster certification. Fantastic work mastering new skills and beginning your underwater adventures. We can’t wait to see where your dives take you next!
Remember: you don’t need a certification to experience the underwater world. If you’re curious, try a Discover Scuba Diving (DSD), no prior certification required. Message us today to book a DSD or discuss your next course.
Workshop Recap: Cetacean Sightings at the Flamingo Marina Whale & Dolphin Festival
At the end of September, the UTSD team attended a workshop on cetacean sightings at the Whale & Dolphin Festival at the Flamingo Marina. We shared recent sighting data, discussed best practices for responsible observation, and connected with fellow researchers and enthusiasts to improve monitoring and protection efforts for local whale and dolphin populations.
